Alanya travel guide: beaches, sights and practical planning

Alanya lies on Antalya province’s Mediterranean coast, with a fortified peninsula between the sea and the Taurus Mountains. A first visit can combine the castle, harbour and beaches with a day inland. Allow roughly three to five days for that mix, or a week if you want slower beach days and longer excursions.

Getting there and choosing a base

Compare flights to Gazipaşa–Alanya Airport (GZP), east of town, and Antalya Airport (AYT), farther west. The best choice depends on your flight and hotel location, not just the airport name. Book the onward journey separately and check the meeting point, luggage allowance and late-arrival arrangements. A sightseeing excursion is not an airport transfer.

Intercity buses arrive at Alanya’s bus terminal. Road journeys from Antalya vary with traffic and stops, so leave a margin rather than relying on a fixed transfer time. Central Alanya suits walking between shops, the harbour and beach areas. Oba and Tosmur offer other hotel options, while Mahmutlar has many apartments; none of these areas is uniformly quiet or inexpensive. Compare the exact beach access, road crossings, meal plan and tour pickup coverage.

Castle, Red Tower and caves

Alanya was known in antiquity as Coracesium. Its surviving fortifications largely reflect the Seljuk period under Alaaddin Keykubat, alongside older and later layers. Explore the castle district, then the Red Tower and the Seljuk shipyard by the harbour. The castle hill involves slopes and uneven paths, so comfortable shoes matter.

Damlataş Cave is known for its stalactites, stalagmites and humid atmosphere. Treat it as a natural attraction, not a treatment for asthma. Nearby Cleopatra Beach takes its name from a local legend, not a documented royal swimming visit. Dim Cave and the Dim River are separate inland destinations; riverside restaurants offer a change of setting, but access to water and swimming rules vary.

Using the Alanya cable car

The cable car connects Damlataş with the castle area; reaching individual monuments still involves walking. The ride is short, but queues can add time. Check the operator’s current tariff, ticket category and last operating time before setting out. A cable-car ticket should not be assumed to include admission to every castle monument. Wind, maintenance and seasonal arrangements can affect service.

Which beach and boat trip?

Cleopatra Beach lies west of the peninsula, while Keykubat and Portakal offer options to the east. İncekum and Fuğla are farther west, outside the centre. Compare access and facilities rather than assuming that a quieter name means an empty beach. Waves, currents and steep changes in depth can occur; follow flags and supervise children.

Coastal boats pass the peninsula and sea caves, with swimming stops when conditions allow. Daytime Starcraft trips, lively party boats and a private yacht are different experiences: check music, food, drinks and passenger arrangements. A “private” experience must be explicitly booked as such.

Nature and active excursions

Sapadere Canyon offers a walk along constructed paths beside the water. The Taurus foothills also provide jeep, buggy, quad and hiking routes. Check distance, terrain and equipment rather than assuming every excursion suits beginners or children. The Dim River is not interchangeable with a mountain trekking programme.

Green Canyon excursions visit the Oymapınar reservoir near Manavgat. Rafting trips generally require a road journey to Köprülü Canyon, not a launch from central Alanya. Paragliding and diving have their own health, age and weather requirements; tandem paragliding means one passenger with a pilot, not two holidaymakers sharing a flight.

For combination tours listed under Antalya, confirm whether pickup from your Alanya hotel is available and included.

Food, markets and getting around

Try meze, grilled aubergine, stuffed vine leaves, kebabs, İskender, gözleme or fish, asking about the day’s selection and ingredients. Harbour terraces suit a leisurely meal; neighbourhood lokantas offer another style of dining. Simit, dürüm and pomegranate juice are useful quick options; check hygiene before buying ready-to-eat seafood such as stuffed mussels.

The Friday market is a well-established shopping stop; confirm its current location locally. Ceramics, peştemal towels, textiles, copperware, nazar charms, spices, lokum and olive-oil soap are popular souvenirs. Alanyum and Konaklı’s Time Center offer alternatives to street shopping. Agree the currency and final price; tips are discretionary, and card acceptance is not universal.

Use buses or minibuses for longer urban journeys, checking the route, fare, payment method and final return service. Board at designated stops. For taxis, clarify the applicable fare arrangements before departure. Before renting a car or scooter, confirm licence, insurance and equipment requirements with the provider; do not assume every foreign licence or insurance policy covers every vehicle.

Families, evenings and festivals

Compare the water park’s actual location, height limits and opening dates. Central Alanya Aquapark and excursions sold under the Waterplanet name should not be treated as the same venue. Dolphin shows involve captive animals and are not wildlife watching; participation conditions need checking. Hamam treatments should be agreed and priced in advance, without expecting medical benefits.

Harbour cafés, sunset walks and live music suit different evenings. The Land of Legends is near Belek, and Aspendos shows involve substantial return travel from Alanya. Confirm the date and venue for Fire of Anatolia, Troy and festival performances. Alanya’s tourism and art festival, jazz events and triathlon have year-specific calendars, not guaranteed recurring dates.

Long-distance trips need a separate plan

Manavgat, Side, Aspendos, Ormana and Altınbeşik Cave offer different cultural or nature outings. For Side, check site restrictions rather than assuming entry to the theatre, which was listed as closed for restoration in October 2026. Demre–Myra–Kekova, Pamukkale and Salda Lake involve long road journeys. Suluada boats leave from Adrasan, not Alanya’s harbour. Cappadocia requires an overnight itinerary; balloon flights depend on weather and permission.

Compare the programmes:

An Istanbul excursion flying from Antalya is a separate trip, not transport between Antalya and Alanya. Check the airport, flight arrangements and return logistics before considering it.

Weather, health and sensible preparation

Summer is hot and busy; spring and autumn often suit sightseeing. Winter can be rainy, and tours may run less frequently or stop seasonally. Pack sun protection, water, comfortable shoes and layers for cooler evenings. Keep valuables attended and take care at road crossings, around water and on steep paths. Do not assume an organised excursion removes all risk or includes medical cover.

For emergencies in Türkiye, call 112 for ambulance, police or fire services. Keep your hotel address and insurance details available. Pharmacies are marked “eczane”; medication and language support vary, so ask rather than relying on blanket promises. Check your insurance terms before booking adventure activities.
