Alanya weather: choosing the right season for your holiday
Alanya has hot, dry summers and milder, wetter winters. A beach holiday in August feels very different from a walk around the harbour in February, so plan around the sea, humidity and daylight as well as the air temperature.
When to visit Alanya
- March–May: warming days and cooler evenings suit walks, the castle and time around the harbour. Early spring can still be rainy, and the sea warms more slowly than the air.
- June–August: the main beach season, with strong sunshine and the hottest weather. July and August can feel humid; visit exposed historic sites early or late rather than at midday.
- September–November: early autumn often offers a good balance of warm water and sightseeing. Rain becomes more likely as the season progresses, so allow alternatives to boat and mountain outings.
- December–February: cooler, quieter and wetter. Alanya Castle and Damlataş Cave remain sightseeing ideas when access and conditions allow, but winter should not be treated as guaranteed beach weather.
Air temperature, humidity and rain
Daytime warmth can give way to noticeably cooler evenings, especially outside summer. Humidity may make hot days feel more demanding, and a coastal breeze does not always bring enough relief. Carry water, use shade and leave time for breaks.
Winter brings the greatest rain risk, including heavy showers and thunderstorms. Summer is much drier, not completely rain-free. Snow is unusual in the coastal town; higher Taurus routes can have very different conditions. Check MGM’s Alanya forecast shortly before travelling and again before outdoor excursions.
Sea temperature and swimming
May–October is a useful starting point for planning a beach holiday, with the warmer-water period usually in late summer and early autumn. May can still feel cool; swimming in October depends on the day and your own comfort. Winter swimming is not a suitable default activity for every visitor.
For actual water temperature, consult MGM sea-temperature observations (Turkish) and check the “Alanya” observation and its timestamp. A station reading is not a measurement for every beach. Wind, waves, beach flags and local advice matter as much as warmth; boat trips may change or be cancelled in unsuitable conditions.
What to pack and plan
Bring sun protection and light clothing for summer, an extra layer for spring and autumn evenings, and a waterproof jacket with closed shoes for winter. Summer days are longer; in winter, finish hikes before dark. Daylight length is not the same as guaranteed sunshine.
Combine beach days with harbour walks, the castle or other visits according to the forecast. Compare Alanya tours and activities, checking seasonal operation, the actual route and participation requirements rather than assuming every activity runs year-round.
