Important Things Tourists Should Know Before a Holiday in Turkey
A little preparation makes a holiday in Turkey easier. Conditions differ between regions and can change, so check current official travel advice for your itinerary rather than treating any destination as risk-free.
Money, payments and shopping
Carry some Turkish lira for small purchases and local transport. Some businesses accept euros, but compare the exchange rate and confirm the currency before paying. Use banks or established exchange offices, check the amount received and keep receipts where useful.
At an ATM, cover your PIN and decline unsolicited help. Check notes and change; a note marked ÖRNEKTİR is a specimen, not spending money. Avoid cosmetics or perfume of uncertain origin. Bargaining may be appropriate at a bazaar stall, whereas supermarkets and restaurants generally use stated prices. Tips are a personal choice, not a universal obligation.
Getting around
Watch traffic carefully, especially when crossing with children. Board and leave vehicles only when stopped, use available seat belts and hold handrails when necessary. A dolmuş is a shared minibus; confirm its destination, fare and return arrangements before boarding.
For taxis, use an identifiable licensed service and clarify the meter or applicable fare. App availability varies by town. If hiring a car, check the rental terms, insurance, deposit and vehicle condition. Airport transfers can be convenient, but confirm the meeting point, luggage allowance and price inclusions rather than assuming every offer is equivalent.
Booking tours and activities
Check the responsible travel agency and its registration through TÜRSAB’s official resources. A website’s verification logo should lead to the official record; a logo alone is not proof. Registration does not replace checking the itinerary, cancellation terms, insurance and what is included.
For activities such as paragliding or rafting, ask about operator credentials, equipment, participation requirements and your own travel-insurance cover. Do not assume an activity is suitable for every age or health condition.
Food, belongings and everyday precautions
Choose food businesses with good visible hygiene and use sealed drinking water when you are unsure of the local supply. Discuss allergies clearly; a simple-looking dish is not necessarily allergen-free. Keep valuables secure, carry only what you need and store passport copies separately from originals.
Supervise children near water, roads and crowds. Avoid isolated places late at night and plan the journey back. Solo travellers should use the same practical checks rather than relying on broad safety assurances. The general emergency number is 112.
Customs and protected objects
Follow mosque visiting instructions, dress appropriately and remove shoes where required. Ask before photographing people. If you wish to help people in need, consider a recognised charity rather than making assumptions about individual requests.
Do not buy or take home objects that may be protected antiquities. Export restrictions can apply even when an item is offered for sale; seek official guidance and documentation before purchasing anything of uncertain origin.
Choosing a destination and budget
Antalya’s resort areas, Side’s beaches and ruins, Bodrum’s town life and Cappadocia’s inland landscapes suit different trips. Two to four days in Cappadocia can be a starting point for planning, not a requirement. Season, altitude and region affect the weather; spring and autumn can suit sightseeing, while beach plans need local conditions checked.
Budget for transport, meals and activities outside your accommodation package. Read all-inclusive exclusions carefully. English, German or Russian may be available in tourist services, but confirm language support when it matters. Keep the plan flexible and check current details before departure.
