About Kos
Kos is the closest Greek island to Turkey, located just 5km from Akyarlar village of Bodrum. Home to 33,000 people, the island is possibly best known for its connection to Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine. It is believed that he was born in 460 BC on Kos and spent much of his life there. Visitors to the island can still find the plane tree under which he famously gave lectures about medicine! Historically speaking, Kos has roots that extend far before Hippocrates's time - it used to be part of Carian civilization. The island then went under Ottoman rule in 1523 before slipping into Italian hands in 1912, followed by German during World War II and British until the end of the war before finally becoming part of Greece in 1947.
