Where did the Turkey earthquake hit?
The earthquake in Turkey hit the provinces of Malatya, Maraş, Gaziantep, Adıyaman and Hatay very hard. About 13 million people were affected by the earthquake and it is said that the number of those who lost their lives will reach 20 thousand.
Turkey's earthquake fault lines
The quake, which had a magnitude of 7.7 on the Richter scale, was one of the strongest seen in that region in recent years. It shook much of the eastern Mediterranean area, and its effects were felt not only in Turkey but also as far away as Georgia. Thousands of homes and buildings were destroyed or damaged due to the quake, with many casualties reported.
Was Cappadocia affected by the earthquake?
No, Cappadocia is not in the earthquake zone and there has been no collapse in Cappadocia due to the earthquake. Located in the 4th degree earthquake zone, Cappadocia has a very low earthquake risk. Touring Cappadocia from Antalya is a safe journey, and visitors have nothing to fear from earthquakes. The route does not cross through any known seismic zones, meaning travelers can rest easy as they take in the sights without worrying about potential tremors.
Was Antalya affected by the earthquake?
No, Antalya is quite far from the earthquake zone. There is no debris caused by the earthquake in the Antalya region.
Was Side affected by the earthquake?
No, Side is quite far from the earthquake zone and has not been affected. Also, Side is not on the earthquake fault line. Side and its surroundings are located in the 3rd degree earthquake zone. Earthquake risk is low.
Alanya and its surroundings are in the 4th degree earthquake zone and the earthquake risk is very low.
The following resorts and cities were not affected in any way by the earthquake:
Antalya, Side, Alanya, Belek, Kemer, Fethiye, Marmaris, Bodrum, Kusadasi, Didim, Cappadocia, Konya and Istanbul. The earthquake did not occur in these cities.
Earthquake Zone
Countries that sent search and rescue teams to Turkey for the earthquake:
Taiwan, Lebanon, Czechia, Malaysia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, Germany, Israel, USA, Russia, Greece, France, South Korea, Pakistan, India, England, Switzerland, Japan, Austria, Spain, Poland, Croatia, Kosovo, Serbia , Moldova, Mexico, Italy, Egypt, New Zealand, China and Australia.
And the Turkish people are showing an incredible example of solidarity. Aid trucks from all over the country flock to earthquake zones. In addition, a very serious and still ongoing monetary support is transferred to the earthquake victims' fund by the public, companies and voluntary organizations.
In addition, large and small companies and voluntary organizations from various countries of the world also provide financial support.
Everyone from many parts of Turkey voluntarily flocked to the earthquake zone. There is a great and meaningful solidarity in the country!
In the Hatay region, where the earthquake hit so brutally, no signal can be received from 350 thousand GSM users. A lot of people want to hope that this is hopefully a charging issue.
A huge amount of aid (clothing, food, water, diapers, baby food) is being shipped from all over Turkey.
Many large and small-scale municipalities and dozens of voluntary organizations in Turkey provide shelter and meals to earthquake victims and search and rescue teams in earthquake zones.
Hotels in many regions of Turkey, especially in Antalya, provide free accommodation and food support to earthquake victims. Volunteer transportation companies provide free transportation of earthquake victims to hotels.
Why did the earthquake cause severe destruction and loss of life in Turkey?
The first answer to this question is that the epicenter of the earthquake is Turkey. The 1st (m7.7) earthquake was in Pazarcık district of Maraş province in southeast Turkey. 9 hours later, the second earthquake occurred in Elbistan, which is close to Pazarcık (m7.6). The fault line here was last active about 1500 years ago and 250 thousand people lost their lives at that time. Another earthquake was expected here.
Unfortunately, due to the poor quality of 80% of the buildings in the region and the local or central government's failure to take the necessary measures in a timely manner, almost all of the poorly constructed buildings were destroyed. The reason for the loss of life in the 1999 Marmara earthquake was the same. Urbanization and uncontrolled construction on earthquake fault lines together with poor quality construction is the biggest reason for the increase in casualties in earthquakes in Turkey. It should be underlined that the construction quality of hotels, holiday villages and almost all buildings in the western regions of Turkey, especially in the regions that attract heavy tourists, is quite good.
Weather in the earthquake zone:
Day/Night (c)
Maras: -3/4
Adiyaman: -2/6
Malatya: -10/5
Gaziantep: -2/5
Hatay: -1/9
Osmaniye: -2/11
A total of 1200 search and rescue officers and 79 search and rescue dogs from 21 European countries came to the region for search and rescue support.
