Green Canyon and Oymapınar: a quieter day in the Taurus Mountains
Beyond the busy Antalya coast, pine-covered slopes and steep rock faces surround the green waters of Oymapınar Reservoir. Known to visitors as Green Canyon, this landscape offers a different kind of day out: a boat journey through mountain scenery rather than a cruise along the beach.
What makes the scenery special?
The reservoir lies on the Manavgat River, north of Manavgat, in the Taurus Mountains. Open stretches of water give way to narrower passages, where cliffs rise beside the boat. Reflections shift with the light and wind; the same view can look deep green one moment and bright turquoise the next.
Watch the pine trees along the slopes, the changing shapes of the rocks and birds above the water. There is plenty to photograph, but it is worth putting the camera away for part of the journey. The appeal is as much in the slow pace as in a particular viewpoint.
A lake shaped by engineering
This is a reservoir, not an untouched natural lake. Oymapınar is a concrete arch dam built between 1977 and 1984 for hydroelectric power. Its height is about 185 metres, its crest is 360 metres long, and storage at normal water level is around 300 million cubic metres. Four turbines provide a combined installed capacity of 540 MW; that figure is capacity, not continuous electricity output.
What to expect on a boat trip
Trips focus on the reservoir and canyon scenery. The precise route, time on the water, meal arrangements and swimming stops depend on the excursion and conditions that day. Do not assume that every boat stops its engine for a silent drift or visits exactly the same places.
If swimming is offered, enter only where and when the crew allows it, and follow their safety instructions. The colour of the water is not a guarantee of water quality or safe swimming conditions.
Choosing your departure point
Trips are available from Antalya, Side, Belek and Alanya. Choose the departure area that matches your accommodation, then check the pickup zone and transfer time before booking. Similar tour names do not necessarily mean identical transport, meals or schedules.
Bring sun protection, comfortable footwear and, for a trip with a swimming stop, swimwear and a towel. Keep belongings secure on board and check what is included rather than relying on a general description.
Green Canyon is a good choice when you want mountain views and a gentler pace. It is not a promise of complete silence: other boats, weather and seasonal demand all shape the experience. Leave room to enjoy the scenery as it is on the day.
