Rhodes is the fourth largest island of Greece (1400 km2) and is called Rhodus (Rhodos), Rodi in Italian, Rados (Rhodos) in Turkish. Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese Islands in the Aegean Sea and the center of the Dodecanese administrative region (which includes the islands of Symi, Herke, Ileki and Meis) and the province of Rhodes.

Rhodes is the name of one of the most beautiful cities not only on the island, but also in the Eastern Mediterranean, full of unique historical monuments and with a very nice climate. This charming and beautiful city is located on the northernmost part of the island at an important point with very good control of the sea route.

Rhodes has attracted the attention of many civilizations since ancient times with its important sea position dominating Anatolia and the Greek mainland. Considered one of the seven wonders of the world, the 32-meter-high bronze Statue of Rhodes (Kolossos), symbolizing the Greek Sun God Helios, was built in 280 BC by the Dorians at the entrance to the port of Rhodes. The castle of the unique city of Rhodes, built by the Knights Templar, and its medieval quarter are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The sea coast is about 220 km long. The city of Rhodes, which bears the same name as the island, is at the end of the northern side of the island. This charming city contains the ancient site, and today's modern trading port. The main airline gateway to the island is Rhodes Diagoras International Airport. Except for the historical city of Rhodes in the north of the island, the most important settlement is Lindos on the southeast coast.

The highest point of the island of Rhodes is Atairo peak in the central part of the island and is 1225 meters.

Rhodes' history goes back three thousand years. The island was under the administration of the Ottoman Empire between 1522 and 1912 and the island still contains many unique historical artifacts from the Ottoman Empire period. Today, Rhodes has a population of 80,000, of which more than half live in the city, and Rhodes has a small Muslim-Turkish minority in its current population.
